The most important thing about a light show

The single most important thing about a light show is simple - control. The most important thing can be missed by many people. Buying big expensive DJ laser lights and other lights many people can mistake as the most important aspect when really a few simple lights can be made into one of the shows that people will remember.

There's one thing that happened to me that I'll never forgot. I went to a show with huge production; I'm talking the highest quality DJ laser lights, the best in the industry of intelligent lights and hundreds of them at that. This was one of the most expensive light shows I've ever seen in all my years going to and producing shows. For one of the greatest set-ups I've ever seen it seemed to be lacking something, I couldn't quite put my finger on it but I knew it was something.

Later I went to a similar show, same amount of people but this time it had about half the amount of intelligent lights & DJ laser lights. Naturally everyone would think the first show was better, with double the amount of lights and lasers how could it not be? Simple actually. I hadn't been able to tell what it was right away but it was clearly my experience in the lighting field and production end of things that had been blocking my view of the obvious. Control - I remember I found out by some people talking about both shows after the second had ended. They loved the lighting show so much they were actually talking about it and how it was way better than that of the other show. One of them said it perfectly; it felt like the lighting show was going to every beat of the music.

It all hit me at once; looking back to both shows I realized, I remembered that was it. The second show literally felt like it was presynced with the music; the slow parts with darker colors and less activity, the climatic parts with huge light shows with each light going perfectly with each sound. The people, the light show, the sound, everything was part of one main thing. It was alive; the show was one and this subconsciously and consciously makes one of the biggest differences a light show can make. The DJ laser lights were only put on at the perfect times and it made for one of the best shows I've ever seen.

Most people would wonder how everyone could miss something so simple, and don't get me wrong some people are definitely doing it but there is too much value on the cost of the equipment when really it's how you use it. Simple old saying that has worth even in the lighting industry, a person with a $1000 light show can out beat someone with a $3000 light show simply by making it a part of the show, a living thing that is always reacting to what's going on around it - not just a machine in loop.

I've added a video below of some laser club footage that I felt did a great job as well, positioning and going to the music are two of the main things. The Laser video below came from Z DJ Laser Lights. As well you can check out another blog with some lighting show tips at : http://www.scribd.com/doc/58346492/DJ-Lighting-col...
